Start a conversation – you could save a life

People across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are being encouraged to start a conversation with friends, family, colleagues and in their communities on World Suicide Prevention Day (Tuesday 10 September).

Having open conversations about mental health and suicide helps to reduce the stigma which can prevent people from seeking help.

Leicestershire County Council's Mental Health Friendly Places initiative helps to support businesses and organisations recognise the signs and symptoms of poor mental health, have healthy conversations and signpost to local mental health and wellbeing services.

Fox Hair Design salon in Barwell became a Mental Health Friendly Place earlier this year. Owner Carl Fox has spoken about his experience with the project and how it has benefited him, his team and his clients.

Carl said: "It's really given the team members the confidence to be able to navigate their way around conversations, to signpost guests that that may need additional help and support [with their mental wellbeing]. Knowing that you've been able to make a difference to somebody is a feeling that's unquantifiable."

The county council's 'Start a conversation' website – www.startaconversation.co.uk – includes advice and guidance, aimed at people who may be having suicidal thoughts, are at risk of suicide, those who are worried about someone else & people who've been bereaved as a result of suicide.

Councillor Louise Richardson, cabinet member for health and chair of the Leicestershire and Rutland Health and Wellbeing board, said, "World Suicide Prevention Day is a reminder to us that suicide is everybody's business – we all have the power to start a conversation and change or save a life.

"Starting the conversation is half the battle, but there are services available, and support for organisations to help spot when those conversations are needed, that make this possible. If you suspect someone isn't feeling ok, ask them."

Any organisations interested in becoming a Mental Health Friendly Place can register online for one of the team to get in touch at www.startaconversation.co.uk/mental-health-friendly-places.
